Curb the Chaos - Managing Independent

and Small Group Learning Time

PRESENTER: Lynne Ecenbarger

SESSION #: 12

Engage your students in meaningful literacy activities while you lead small group instruction.  You’ll center learning on strategy-building while your students independently engage in skill-level lessons that are consistently applied to text.  Plus, get great tips for scheduling, setting routines, minimizing noise and interruptions, taming transitions, and building a sense of community.

The Magic of Music and Movement

PRESENTER: Stephen Fite

SESSION #: 13

This hands-on, participatory workshop will bring teachers a new perspective on using music with children.  They will see the connection between music and movement and the active nature of the child, as well as, how music can effectively be used to meet the cognitive, emotional, social and physical needs of young children.  Stephen will give the participants activities they can take with them and use immediately in their classrooms.

SESSION 2

Kindergarten Writing: Yes You Can!

PRESENTER: Janiel Wagstaff

SESSION #: 21

Involve your students in writing from the first day of school.  This session will cover ideas for making a meaningful kindergarten writing workshop work in your classroom.  We’ll focus on creative methods to inspire kids to write, write, write!

First Aid for Struggling Kindergarteners

PRESENTER: Lynne Ecenbarger

SESSION #: 22

It’s a 9-1-1 rescue for struggling students!  Lynne helps you change the “how” we teach, not the “what” we teach, by planning consistent, multi-level activities in reading, language arts, and math that support and engage low-achieving students with memory, perceptual, attention, and processing difficulties.  You’ll learn how to help your struggling learners become successful learners!

Using Series Books to Develop Print Knowledge

PRESENTER: Anne McGill-Franzen

SESSION #: 23

In this breakout session Anne will demonstrate the use of narrative and informational series books to develop kindergartners’ awareness of the way stories work - setting, problem, and resolution— and the way topics can be organized in informational text.  By composing their own stories and documenting their own learning by writing and drawing, kindergartners consolidate their print and alphabet knowledge, increase the words they can read and write fluently, and gather and share their ideas with their peers.

Patterns, Shadows, & Opposites:

Making a Photo-Concept Book

PRESENTER: Steve Swinburne

SESSION #: 24

Using his six photo-concept books (Lots and Lots of Zebra Stripes - Patterns in Nature; Guess Whose Shadow?; What’s a Pair? What’s a Dozen?; What’s Opposite?;  What Color is Nature?; Go, Go, Go - Kids on the Move)  as models, Steve shows teachers how they can encourage their students to come up with their own questions and answers about patterns, shadows, numbers, colors, opposites, and activities.

Steve will share a numbers of books that school kids have made based on his photo-concept books and highlights the classroom connections he’s discovered involving visual arts, music, dance, and math.

SESSION 3

Fun and Phonemic Awareness

PRESENTER: Janiel Wagstaff

SESSION #: 31

This session will focus on time-saving tips and hands-on activities to promote phonemic awareness.  For example, see how to easily extend shared reading and read aloud experiences into fun, game-like sound play.  Work smarter not harder to develop your students’ skills!

Tell, Retell, and Beyond

PRESENTER: Lynne Ecenbarger

SESSION #: 32

If the informal assessments you use only monitor comprehension through retellings, there may be a missing link in preparing students to be full-fledged “meaning-makers”.  You’ll explore activities for explicit, systematic instruction in the areas of synthesizing, clarifying and monitoring, predicting, and questioning strategies when using both fiction and nonfiction text.

Music for Everyone

PRESENTER: Stephen Fite

SESSION #: 33

Everyone enjoys music!  Especially children!  What better medium to use in the classroom to teach and reinforce skills than something that will draw them in and hold their attention!  This energetic presentation by Stephen Fite will send you home with great ideas to supplement your curriculum and make music fun for everyone!
