The medical research pertaining to the brain being utilized by the education community comes from literally hundreds of studies from around the world.  This session presents the information under five umbrellas that collapse the findings into meaningful categories that impact our practices in the classroom and provide new insights for parents and teachers.

Creating centers for active learners.  What does an interactive, early childhood classroom look like?  One that is appropriate, fun, and where learning is happening everywhere?  Take an in-depth look at teaching your children while learning how to create.  Learn about room arrangement, scheduling, activity selections and how the environment helps control behavior.  Learn how the classroom is experienced by children.  All of this will be done in an interactive hands-on environment.

Join Californians Kaye and Virginia as they show you how to teach little children to listen and follow directions.  In this make-n-take presentation, you will be taken step-by-step through two art lessons to go along with an ocean unit.  Each participant will receive a handout & ideas to integrate literature, math, language arts, music and art throughout the K-1 curriculum.

This session is full of creative ways to teach children.  Making books with children; art projects which develop listening skills, games which require children to follow directions and cooperate with classmates – these are some of the unique ideas that will be shared.  Dozens of examples will be displayed and handouts will be given.  You will learn lots of patterns and ideas that you can use immediately in your classroom.  One portion of the presentation will be dedicated to “Ideas that will help you get off on the right foot” (projects for the first month of school).

All Alabama teachers are required to teach Character Education ten minutes every day.  We have a list of twenty-five traits that we are expected to cover during each school year.  This session will give you examples of how this can be done by using good children’s literature and activities that span the curriculum.  Beth Corum’s teacher resource book WANNABEE is in it’s second printing and has been adopted by school systems throughout Alabama and Mississippi as the core of their Character Education programs.  Many of her “old favorites” will be shared as well as the revisions and additions that are part of the second printing.

Gallop into the Wild, Wild, West with dozens of fun activities, books, and decorations integrated across the curriculum.  Your cowboys and cowgirls will learn how to make costumes and class books.  Various visual aids and materials will be available.
 

Presentation: Sing Me A Story, Read Me A Song

Storytelling, puppets, flannel board, and props can bring out the fun of circle time.  Music and movement enhances the curriculum and brings every student back to task.  I will demonstrate music & movement activities that can be used to enhance science, math and reading.  I will introduce new props for standard and favorite books to be used as storytelling activities.  This workshop is interactive.  Conferees will be up and moving!

In this idea-packed workshop learn how “Bunny” uses storytelling to enhance children’s learning across the Language Arts curriculum.  She will share her ideas on play acting, songs, poems, scissor and mitt stories and much, much more!

Shake, rattle and add your way into easy and inexpensive ways to enhance K-1 math activities.  Measurement, money, graphs and glyphs are only a fraction of what this workshop encompasses.  You will be inundated with ideas for games that will have your children shaking through subtraction, rattling with reasoning skills and adding fun to your mathematics program.
 
 

Presentation:  A Tradition of Storytelling –Clay Storytellers

Unlock the code to teaching storytelling by exploring the various techniques employed by the Pueblo Indians.  The Pueblo Tribe began a new tradition in 1964 when Helen Cordero made the first storyteller out of clay.  Learn how to make storytelling figures to enhance your storytelling techniques for your favorite stories.  Ideas will also be discussed on how the students can make books after being involved in storytelling.
 
 

Presentation:  Positive Discipline Techniques to Use with Young Children

This workshop will focus on resolving real-life problems that occur in most classrooms.  Practical tips will be shared with step-by-step scripts and other materials that will be useful in introducing conflict resolution skills and helping students to internalize them.  Participants will be shown how to use a class agenda, a peace table, and class meetings to help students become peaceful problem-solvers.

Leap into the new millennium with an old favorite!  Frog Street Press continues to be a meaningful addition to every curriculum.  This workshop is designed to provide hands-on, learner centered ideas to enrich all Language Arts programs.  Teachers will leave hopping into the next school year with ideas, games, centers and patterns to increase letter/sound recognition, phonemic awareness and pre-reading skills.  Throughout the workshop teachers will gain a better understanding of providing and using a print rich environment, the importance of phonemic awareness, and brain-based ideas to internalize letter/sound recognition.  Teachers will be “toad”ally excited to leap into a new school year!
